Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) based on xylitol, citric acid, and malic acid were synthesized and used in ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and heating-bath extraction of phosphate rock and mineral supplement samples. Arsenic, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P and Zn were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The results showed the NADES as promising solvents for extraction of inorganic matrices compared to reference values and concentrations obtained using microwave-assisted acid digestion (MW-AD). Significant differences were observed for some elements, suggesting different chemical interactions between the synthesized NADES and each monitored element. For analytes extraction of phosphate rock, UAE presented the best results for As, Cr and P. Zinc was extracted with UAE and heating bath. Concerning mineral supplement, no significant differences were observed for Ca (UAE), Cd (UAE and heating bath), K (UAE and heating bath), Mn (UAE and heating bath), Na (UAE and heating bath), and P (UAE and heating bath). The NADES is a greener and a potentially alternative for the sample preparation compared to the official methods of analysis, can being used as selective extractor solvent in conventional sample preparation methods.

Cannabis sativa has many promising medicinal applications for the mitigation, or even cure, of chronic diseases. The high bioaccumulation potential of C. sativa enables its use for the phytoremediation and detoxification of soil, may increase the levels of inorganic elements in products such as cannabidiol (CBD) extracts being necessary the evaluation/monitoring of the level of inorganic components, mainly the toxic species in these formulations. An analytical method employing graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) was developed for the quantification of Pb, As, and Cd in commercial CBD extracts and homemade samples. The alkaline solubilization was employed in agreement with the external analytical curve, in a robust method. The limits of quantification were 0.26 (Pb), 0.067 (As), and 0.011 µg g-1 (Cd), with satisfactory accuracy (80-120%) and relative standard deviation (RSD) values < 7%. The CBD extracts presented levels of Pb, As and Cd below the maximum limits established by regulatory agencies.

The concentration of arsenic in tissues of tilapia was evaluated and an estimation of the risks associated with the consumption of this fish was done, taking into account the guidelines established by FAO/WHO. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique in kinetic energy discrimination (KED) mode was employed and certified reference materials were analyzed with recoveries of 101, 110, and 80% from NIST 1640a (trace elements in water), NIST 1566b (oyster tissue), and DORM-3 (fish protein). In the consumable portion (the muscle fish tissue), the average concentration found was 0.030 ± 0.008 µg g-1, which is below the arsenic maximum level established by international regulatory agencies. The average concentration found in the viscera (stomach, gills, and liver) was 0.485 ± 0.225 µg g-1, concluding that the viscera had greater capacity for the bioaccumulation of arsenic. From this study was possible to monitor the arsenic element in different tilapia specimens evidencing its accumulation throughout the body of the fish.

Inorganic elements present in pharmaceutical products were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), employing microwave acid digestion as a sample preparation method. The most abundant isotopes, 75As+, 65Cu+, 52Cr+, 58Ni+, 208Pb+, and 51V+, were determined in acyclovir ointment and its constituents. Elemental impurities in the pharmaceutical samples were determined using an inductively coupled plasma-universal cell technology-mass spectrometer (ICP-UCT-MS) operated in kinetic energy discrimination (KED) and standard mode. The accuracy of the method was assessed by means of addition and recovery experiments. Except for Cr, spiked recoveries of the elements added to the samples before microwave acid digestion (MW-AD) step were between 95.1 and 126%, and after MW-AD step ranged from 85.6 to 132%. Limits of detection (LOD) obtained by proposed method is in agreement to those required by the U.S. Pharmacopeia Convention (USP), showing that the ICP-MS technique is well suited for quantification of these elements. The LOD's (ng L-1) for 51V+, 52Cr+, 58Ni+, 65Cu+, 75As+ and 208Pb+ in 1% v v-1 HNO3 medium were: 2.2, 81.3, 91.9, 6.9, 0.2 and 3.1, respectively. The concentration of the analytes in these samples presented a wide range, varying from 2.3 ± 0.8 µg kg-1 for As to 3446 ± 47 µg kg-1 for Cr.
